AWARE is a champion of worker’s rights. Along with other diverse organizations and individuals, we are working to build global awareness around the exploitation of workers as we pursue a single goal of effective human rights advocacy and implementation.
The UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) for all people and all nations states that ‘everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment’. But many nations around the world, particularly repressive governments across the Middle East and North Africa, do not follow these clear and basic rights that belong equally to every person.
Massive construction projects for state-of-the-art office skyscrapers, hotels, stadiums, and airports are proceeding at the expense of workers who will die because of deplorable and unsafe conditions. In particular, exploitation of labor remains rampant at one of the world’s largest building projects located in Doha, Qatar, as the tiny Middle East nation in the Arabian Gulf prepares for the 2022 FIFI World Cup. In Qatar, and elsewhere in the region, despite massive public exposure about these appalling work conditions, local authorities and lawmakers continue to do nothing effective to end labor exploitation.
AWARE’s mission is to expose abuses and to implement measures that ensure safe and humane working conditions.
