AWARE is a champion for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Along with other diverse organizations and individuals, we are working to build global awareness around the abuses to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as we pursue a single goal of effective human rights advocacy and implementation.
Around the world, repressive governments continue to overlook violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This has led to execution, torture, violence and imprisonment of LGBT people. In fact, consensual sex by two people of the same gender may be punishable by death in many countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and parts of Nigeria and Somalia.
Governments and world leaders must respect all forms of human life and sexual orientation, and take the necessary steps to end violence committed against LGBT people, including repealing laws criminalizing homosexuality and ending torture on the grounds of sexual orientation.
